Ramp Training & Fit Guide

Most pets take to a ramp quickly once it’s introduced the right way — flat, slow, and worth their while.

Start Flat, Not Steep

Lay the ramp flat on the ground first, with nothing propped up at all. Let your pet walk across it like it’s just another part of the floor before you ever angle it against the bed, couch, or car. This single step prevents most of the hesitation people run into.

Make the First Few Trips Irresistible

  • Lure with a treat or favorite toy, one small step at a time
  • Reward every forward step, not just reaching the top
  • Keep a leash on for gentle guidance — never force or push
  • End each session on a success, even a small one

Raise the Angle Gradually

Once your pet is comfortable walking the ramp flat, prop it at its lowest setting against the target surface. Increase the angle over several days rather than jumping straight to full height — patience here pays off much faster than pushing through resistance.

If they freeze or back away: lower the incline or shorten the session. Rushing a hesitant pet usually sets training back further than it moves it forward.

Getting the Fit Right

A ramp that’s the right length and angle for your vehicle or furniture makes training far easier from the start. See the Car Ramp Sizing Guide for how to measure and choose, or try the Find Your Fit Quiz for a quick recommendation based on your pet.
