Car Ramp Sizing Guide

The right length and angle make the difference between a ramp your dog uses every day and one that sits folded in the garage. Here’s how to get the fit right.

Measure the Height First

Park on level ground and measure straight up from the pavement to the lip of the trunk, tailgate, or back seat — wherever your dog will step on. That single number drives everything else about ramp length and angle.

Match Height to Ramp Length

Vehicle height
Recommended ramp length
Approx. incline
Sedan trunk (18–24″)
48–61″
~20–24°
SUV / crossover (24–30″)
61–70″
~20–24°
Truck bed / tall SUV (30–36″)
70″+ or a telescoping two-piece ramp
~22–26°

These are starting points, not hard rules. Senior dogs, small breeds, and dogs recovering from surgery all do better on the longer, shallower end of each range — a flatter ramp is always easier than a steep one, even if it means a bit more floor space when it’s set up.

Rule of thumb: if you have room for it, size up rather than down. A ramp that’s a little too long is a minor inconvenience; one that’s too steep often gets refused entirely.

Weight Capacity and Surface Matter Too

Check the ramp’s rated weight capacity against your dog’s actual weight, not just their size class. Look for a textured, non-slip surface that stays grippy when wet, and raised side rails if your dog is anxious, unsteady, or prone to wandering off-center.

Folding vs. Telescoping

Folding ramps are lighter and quicker to stow for everyday trips. Telescoping two-piece ramps extend further and work well for taller vehicles, but take a bit more room to store. If you’re using it daily, prioritize how quickly you can set it up and put it away.

A Few Options Worth a Look

Once you’ve got the ramp, a calm introduction matters as much as the fit — see the Ramp Training & Fit Guide for a step-by-step approach.
